What is Photonics and why is it so important for industry?
We focus our research on two main areas:–More efficient, smaller LED drivers– to reduce energy consumption and enable new, more compact LED system designs.–Smart lighting systems – ensuring that light is only on, or only where it’s really needed.Both areas have a strong impact on reducing the CO₂ footprint and make an important contribution to the EU’s zero-emission goals.

Photonics is often described as the science of light. Can you share how your work in photonics helps solve real-world problems, and what personally fascinates you most about working with light?
Lighting accounts for about 20–40% of a building’s total electricity consumption. So, if we can reduce the energy needed through more efficient LED drivers or smart systems, it’s not only good for the climate but also helps save money.
What fascinates me personally are the challenges: pushing a system to deliver the best possible performance while keeping cost competitive – or even reducing costs further.

What fascinates you personally about Photonics—and how is it changing industrial applications?
I recently shifted my focus from power electronics to sensors and smart lighting. It’s a field with lots of room for new developments: saving energy while making life more convenient for users and customers. The big idea is that no direct interaction is needed—the light is simply on where and when it’s needed, and off in all other cases. In future the systems might even be able to detect which kind of light is necessary, how bright it should be.

What is your personal motto or slogan?
Innovation starts with thinking and doing things differently.

Which person (dead or alive) would you like to meet for coffee, tea or beer?
I would like to talk to Albert Einstein to tell him the great impact of his theories.

What do you particularly appreciate about Vorarlberg—both professionally and personally?
As a “Vorarlbergian”, I am glad to have grown up in this region. The region offers many opportunities when it comes to jobs and innovative companies. It’s a real pleasure to work in such an environment. On top of that, the nature here is very versatile and allows for many different activities. I really enjoy spending time outdoors—and often, beautiful places are just around the corner from home.

If you were to invite your team to a meal from your home country, what would you serve?
Definitely Kaiserschmarren 😊

What is your favourite spice?
Cinnamon especially in combination with something sweet.

What is your favourite drink or cocktail?
I enjoy the variety! Non-alcoholic cocktails in particular are definitely worth a try 😉

What is your favourite fruit or vegetable?
Chestnuts – although technically they’re neither a fruit nor a vegetable.
